Browser Plug-ins for Academic Research: Zotero and LibX

Stop by Classroom A on the first floor of the Melville Library on May 28th at 3 PM to learn more about these free tools for your browser that can increase the effectiveness of your research. These workshops are offered as part of the Innovations in Education Colloquium 2009. For an complete list of offerings visit https://tlt.stonybrook.edu/FacultyServices/FacDev/Conf/Pages/SummerColloquium.aspx

Zotero is a bibliographic management tool that lets you store, management and cite your resources right directly from Firefox. Unlike tools like EndNote or RefWorks, there is no fee and you can take your library with you as you move to other institutions. Zotero automatically detects metadata from library catalogs, databases and certain websites, and allows you to create bibliographies in a variety of style guide formats. An optional plug-in for Word or OpenOffice, creates in-text citations and works cited or references lists based on your in-text citations. For more information, visit www.zotero.org.

LibX is a tool that allows you to search library resources directly from your browser without having to visit the library website. Visit http://www.stonybrook.edu/library/services/instruction/libx.html for more information on features and to download the Stony Brook University Edition.

The library is offering two EndNote workshops this summer. For Fall 2009 workshops, check stonybrook.edu/library and then click on Library Instruction. You can also email fiona.grady@stonybrook.edu if you have any questions.
