Newspaper Research Workshop on 4/15 @ 3 PM

Extra! Extra! Become an Expert at Finding New & Historic Newspaper Articles!

This session examines ways to find current and historical articles in newspapers. We'll look at online indexes and collections of digitized newspapers, as well as explore old-fashioned ways to dig in the newspaper archives. In this workshop, you will:

  • Become familiar with the odd nature of newspaper indexing
  • Effectively search online newspaper indexes
  • Effectively use non-online resources for locating older articles
  • Find, display, and print articles from the library's online newspaper collections
  • Find, display, and copy articles from the library's microformat collection of newspapers

Libraries Closed on Saturday April 3rd for Spring Break

This workshop will highlight some of the most interesting web sites and web tools, and discuss search methods to help you find quality historical information online. Learn about:

  • History Web Sites
  • Major Digital and Audio/Visual Collections

  • Historic Newspaper Collections

  • Google Books and other Online Book Collections

  • Domain Searches and Other Advanced Searching

  • Creating a Google Custom Search

  • Wikipedia as a way of finding Online Resources

Workshop: Beyond Blackboard

Beyond Blackboard there are collaborative Web tools and networks for enhancing group work, sharing content and managing projects. In this workshop learn:

• How to create and mange groups on the Web using PBWorks, Google Groups and more
• Tips and tools for online group work
• How to share online content and research, including using Google Docs
• Where researchers and scholars share links and build communities online, including Connotea and LinkedIn

Citations Workshop on 2/16 Cancelled Due to Weather

Tonight's Citation Skills workshop has been cancelled due to the weather.

The workshop is also being offered online on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 PM. If you would like to join that session, visit https://meeting.sinc.stonybrook.edu/library and sign in with your NetID and password, if you have one, or as a guest.

If you need help ASAP, the library offers one sheet handouts on APA and MLA styles.

The website for the Online Writing Lab at Prudue University offers comprehensive help on APA, MLA and Chicago. The information is easy to read and understand, and covers formatting a paper, in text citations, and the References or Works Cited list. They cover a wide variety of
scenarios and source types, including multiple authors, websites without a date, scholarly articles from a library database, blogs, television programs, etc.

Zotero Now Offers 100 MB of Free Storage for PDFs, Images, etc.

Zotero now offers 100 mb of cloud-based storage for PDFs, images, screenshots, and other files free of charge. Additional storage space can be purchased if needed.

If you are not already familiar with it, Zotero is a free bibliographic management tool for researchers.
