Browser Plug-ins for Academic Research: Zotero and LibX

Stop by Classroom A on the first floor of the Melville Library on May 28th at 3 PM to learn more about these free tools for your browser that can increase the effectiveness of your research. Zotero is a bibliographic management tool that lets you store, management and cite your resources right directly from Firefox. Unlike tools like EndNote or RefWorks, there is no fee and you can take your library with you as you move to other institutions. Zotero automatically detects metadata from library catalogs, databases and certain websites, and allows you to create bibliographies in a variety of style guide formats. An optional plug-in for Word or OpenOffice, creates in-text citations and works cited or references lists based on your in-text citations. For more information, visit www.zotero.org.

Time to Return/Renew Library Material

Students, Faculty, Management Confidential, Emeritus and Professional staff who currently have borrowed library material due May 19,2009, from the Main, Music and/or the Science/Engineering Library, are urged to return or renew at this time.

For those renewing, the new due date will be Dec. 21, 2009. Items already renewed 3 times, must be returned and may then be checked out again.

For information on how to renew online via STARS/OPAC, please go to the URL below. To renew in person, please present your ID card to service desk staff. It is not necessary to bring the material into the library in order to have them renewed. Overdue material can not be renewed. There are no phone renewals.

The Central and North Reading Rooms will be open:

Sunday – Thursday until 4 a.m.
Friday and Saturday until 12 a.m.


Circulation Services including Reserve Material will not be extended!

Uniformed guards will help maintain a clean, quiet, and safe study space:

SBU IDs are required to enter the Reading Rooms

  • after midnight Sun. – Thurs.

  • and after 8 p.m. Fri. – Sat.

The No Food and Drink Policy (except bottled water) will be strictly enforced.

Melville Library Author Series: Passport to Illness: Voyages In and Out of Medicine featuring Dr. Shetal Shah, M.D., Assistant Professor of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Program: In fourteen distinct narratives, Dr. Shetal Shah outlines in Passport to Illness: Voyages In and Out of Medicine not just the medical cases that make one a physician, but the personal stories, anecdotes, and relationships that each doctor brings to the bedside. From inner-city New York to the streets of Cuba to rural towns in Kenya, he guides you through his unique world, where the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and the bedside of a fragile, premature infant in New York are not far apart.
